Consolidation: A group or groupage shipment of two or more shippers in a shipping container. Consolidation shipments are handled by a cargo consolidaiton agent who specializes in handling these kind of shipments. These cargos are often shipped via an interim port and then removed from the original container and transferred to another container on a different vessel. Also Referred to as a trans-shipment. International Mover or Company: Company offering full logistical services from one country to another. Cubic Meter (M3 or CBM): measurement for packing volume used by many countries equaling 34.5 cubic feet. Volume is equivilant to approx. 8-10 standard sized suitcases, or the same volume as a medium sized refrigerator.
Door to Door Service: Goods are packed and sent (and covered by marine insurance) from door of business or residence of ther shipper to the door or residence of receiver of the goods. It usually applies to goods being brought inside of residence as well, including setting items in desired rooms, upwrapping and possibly reassembly of furniture, and removal of packing debris. If required full unpacking can be arranged, at extra cost.
Door to Port Service: Goods are sent (and insured) to the Port of Entry only. Owner of goods must then arrange to have goods customs cleared and delivered.
Lift Van (L/V): A large wooden packing box with a packing volume of approx. 5 cubic meters. Usual measurements are 2.20 x 2.10 x 1.6 meters.
FCL: Full container load, usually from one shipper.
LCL: A shipment less than a full container load. Shipments in L/VÅ› are referred to as LCL shipments.
Pallet: A wooden platform on which goods (particular machinery or pieces of large machinery, have been strapped to by gpastric or steel banding. Though more economical than shipping items in lift Vans, the likelihood of damage is greater for palletized goods.
Air Carton: specially designed paperboard carton for air shipments. Usually has a special paperboard pallet built in underneath.
